To Scroll or Not to Scroll?
Its long been said that making a visitor scroll on your site is a cardinal sin of web design. That may not be completely true though. Most users don’t mind having to scroll up and down, but if it’s left to right that you’re talking, steer clear!
Here are a few points to remember about scrolling when designing your website.
• All important information, such as navigation bars and other key information, should be located at the top of your site. Never make anyone scroll to find them!
• Remember, mice scroll these days. It is no longer about using a scroll bar, in most cases. Just turning the wheel on the mouse.
• There are people out there who don’t have scrolling mice though, or have poor eye hand coordination, so refer to rule number 1 above – put everything that’s important on top of your site!
• Use standard scroll bars. It might look cool to create customized Flash or other scroll bars, but you could be compromising functionality. Of course, if your creativity really gets the better of you, users may not even notice the scroll bar!
• If in doubt, choose scrolling over pagination. Having to click to go to the next page to continue reading and article or other content just gets annoying. Avoid it!
• Give users a choice by providing links to other parts of your content, and return links at the end of those parts. That way, they can click instead of scroll.
• We have mentioned it before, but never, ever make pages that scroll from side to side, whether by accident or design! Even scrolling mice can’t solve that one! And, if you cut your content vertically, it might look fine on a standard monitor, but on a smaller monitor, your users will have to scroll backwards and forwards on each line.
From this, you should have gathered that scrolling is not the taboo it used to be, and most sites these days will have some scrolling involved in reading the content. Just follow these rules, and consider what you would prefer if you were the user, and you should be fine.
