Do You Know The Rules Of Web Layout?

When it comes to web design it’s common knowledge that web layout does not get the attention it deserves. Do you know the rules of web layout or are you one of those that don’t’ give it a second thought. If you are, you’re likely loosing a lot of traffic to your website.

One of the most overlooked elements in web design is in the web layout. Your web layout includes such things as frames, tables, CSS, and so much more, but let’s look at a few key points in your web layout.

Don’t Crowd
Use the entire page area and make sure you don’t crowd your text or images. Leave lots of white space for easy reading. Remember to keep screen resolution in mind. When working on your web design and your web layout, keep in mind that all users have at least 640×480, and many users have 800×600, while only a few have the highest resolutions. Having visitors not see everything on your page or having to scroll will have your visitors hitting the back button in a big hurry.

Images
The most common mistake made in web design is to just drop images anywhere on a page without much thought. It’s very important that you align your images so that text wraps nicely and makes for a nice flow of your text on the page. You should also be sure to limit the number of graphics and the size of those graphics since graphics are the number one reason for slow loading pages.

Text Width

Commonly called the scan length it refers to the number of words that will be displayed on any one line. Most people can read 7 to 12 words per line very comfortably. If the text line is longer than that it becomes harder to read, while shorter than that is too distracting, so keep these numbers in mind when you are working on your web layout. You should always align your text right or left and avoid using the centering of text. It’s not only difficult to design a site that is all centered it’s difficult to read.

There you have it – three key components to your web design. Now that you know what to watch for in your web layout you’ll be on your way to designing a professional looking website.
