The Role of a Site Structure in Web Design

Every web designer just how important it is to have a solid structure. The site structure is to a good web site what a solid strong foundation is to a god house. It is therefore important for web designer to pay great care to the site structure if only to be assured of a good web site.

In developing an adequate site structure, one must go through three key elements. The content outline comes first followed by a site diagram. The final jig saw in this puzzle is the wire frames that may also be termed the page description diagram. Although these steps need to be completed in that sequence, all three of them are dependent upon each other. The success of one step will directly improve chances of pulling off the next one successfully.

Creating the content outline is perhaps one of the greatest challenges in web design. Fortunately, the decision of what content is to be included or otherwise may lie out of the designer’s hands. The most one can do is to work on a structure where such content will be fitted. The designer has no option but to work with all the stakeholders or clients in creating a list of all the possible content.

One can also work closely with the clients to establish the suitability of the information to be posted on the site. This should be done with the audience in mind. At the end of the day, it is the test of the audience that will count given the fact that they will be the primary consumers of that site. One must borrow from the needs of the audience as earlier stated while designing the project brief. While considering content that is already available it is pertinent that the structures makes provisions of what content may be included in future. This is indicative of allowing for growth once the web site is up and running.

Once all content has been accounted for, the next step should deal with the placement of such materials into categories. The content should be grouped with the likely feedback generated among users in mind. The categories should lead to the creation of an outline of all content. Clients will be required when reviewing the established outline for purpose of clarity. This feed back is bets received courtesy of a card sort approach.

A content outline is hardly complete unless such information is presented in the form of a flow chart. A flow chart is the best option when developing a site diagram. This is because it allows a clear and simple demonstration of the kind of items to be availed on the browser. One can get an idea of all the topics that will be posted on the browser hence a pointer to each of the information items. This enhances the final outlook of the web site. Some of the popular programs used in constructing a site diagram include Visio, Omni raffle and Excel.

Even a site diagram presents content in a very clear pattern; the web designer must still develop wire frames. These frames also referred to as page description diagrams present in clusters all the elements available on every browser page. The web designer may therefore create wire frames for individual web pages. This will provide a broader option as well as present information in terms of the priority that it is accorded.
