The Role of Reflections in Web Design
A reflection is not something that a designer will put on a site directly even if they wanted to. However, they achieve such an effect through a combination of certain elements. One of the simplest ways for creating a reflection during web design is by creating shiny surfaces on the web browser. This is achieved through careful selection of color and tone. Another from of reflection comes through a shiny table concept.
Reflections may be used to highlight certain items on a browser page. This effect is only possible if the designer selects the items that he uses on the web page in a clever manner. Over a number of years designers have used glass beads, water droplets and shiny plastic buttons to achieve spectacular highlights. This trend has several sources but is said to have originated from Apple’s web site. On that site, shiny plastic tabs were and are still in use today. This created an impression of a light source strategically placed above the tabs. When contrasted against the inner surface creates that plastic effect. The interface feel and look commonly dubbed Aqua is another popular reflection that has been adopted by a countless number of designers.
Designers can also use reflections to create different settings. By using humid slanting stroke pattern of icons, the designer creates a very attractive reflection. This effect presents a rich polished carbon thread look. When plastic buttons are used cleverly, they may also create an impression of reflections that move up the buttons eventually falling off at the shape’s edge. The edges though sharp eventually appear as though they are rounded.
The shiny table is another popular effect for web designers to try out. Although its popularity has brought out a fear that it could be overused it retains that quality and rich appearance. Designers may feel tired using it but user still find it cool hence using this kind of reflection still counts.
The placement of buttons is vital. Some effects are only realized if the buttons are placed at the top or around the edges of the site. This effect can be attained in different ways such as using fading and grayed out icons against a white background. When solid objects are involved, the designer can choose a specific color that can reflect on the surface. The object must be placed in such a manner that the color appears to be striking it from a certain distance. Achieving this reflection is a process that involves a number of steps. Eventually one must also come up with the right mix of colors as well as the appropriate angle.
Web designers can create whatever effect they want by playing around the icons that they choose to sue on the site. This will also be supplemented by the color choice as well as the tone that the designer assigns it. However, the use of reflections must not indicate a case of over use. Too much reflection will be a put off to some users. When used against text it can interfere with the readability of content on the site.
