Role of Graphics in Web Design
December 30, 2008
Aaron Charles - 123Triad Web Design & SEO Company
Web design is a process that makes electronic content available for dissemination and display using various Internet technology platforms. The aim of web design is to construct a website that presents content to the end user in the form of web pages upon request or a search. Elements such as text, forms, and bit-mapped images can be placed on the page using search able tags. More complex media such as animations, videos, vector graphics, and sounds can also be embedded into web pages.
These, however are not mandatory. There are web sites which are devoid of any graphics. That is, they consist wholly of text.
However, images not only make websites more attractive but also increase retention levels that cannot be matched by purely text-oriented websites. The visible content such as the text, layout, and graphics is commonly known as the front-end. On the other hand, the source code, scripts, and the server-based utilities that support the website are known as the back-end.
Browsers such as you and I normally will not have access to any of the back-end utilities. The Web Designer for the most part will work with these back-end utilities and only test the front-end utilities to view the end-product. Depending on the nature of the website, it could be necessary to have several people working on different aspects of the website design. However, a multi-skilled designer could complete a project on their own.
All websites have a Landing page, Home page or Index page. Some websites use a Splash page which is essentially a language or region selection, welcome message, or disclaimer page. These can be time wasting if you are in a hurry. For people with short attention time spans, they can be inappropriate features. Ultimately, these splash pages direct browsers to the landing page. All the other pages within the website are HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) files and each of these files or pages can be accessed directly if the URL (Universal Resource Locater) link is known. The URL Link is the set of letters that can be read on the address bar at the top of the screen whenever a web page is accessed.
Every web page once created is linked to another using navigation or routing menu composed of hyperlinks. These links provide access from one page to another either in the same website or to another. They can be considered as guides that enable browsers to move from one topic to another.
Upon completion, websites should be published for consumption in servers or locations where they can be viewed by the public or clients through the Internet. Publishing is achieved by uploading using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client. A variety of methods can be used to make the website more accessible or visible. This may include submitting specific terms (Meta tags) to search engines like Google, Yahoo or Alta Vista so that upon typing such text, the websites having those tags will pop up first among the listed once. Other methods include exchanging links with other web sites.
