Will RIA Rule Over HTML in Website Design?

Does the emergence of Rich Interface Application signals the end of the HTML methodology? HTML, having been known for its simple architecture, easy to learn and use approach and low cost has its limitations on certain complex applications. HTML’s limitation of requiring many pages to redraw or to refresh its pages every time a change is to be reflected was solved through RIA technologies like AJAX and Flex.

RIAs speak of a new set of technologies which is a combination of in-depth and powerful user interface capabilities of desktop applications and yet uses a wide and low-cost deployment of web applications.

RIAs encourage its users to interact more through the use of flash games, interactive menus, customization and manipulation.  The fact is, RIAs are more client-based rather than server-based because it boasts more of greater accessibility what with the users not needing to install them as the updates and distribution of the application is done automatically.

Most RIAs consist of two major components :

1). A Web-based client interface through which users interact with the application and

2). A central application server where information is stored.

The techniques applied by a RIA can be either through asynchronous mode, sandbox, disconnected mode, dynamic pages, web services and framework. Based on the discussion above, website design done through RIA is far much different from designing a standard web site.

A website designer in RIA has to spend considerable time in thinking how sound, movement and other seamless transitions can work together to provide a rich and complete use experience.  And once the initial design is done, the website designer to implement the RIA to the fullest must work hand on hand with a developer who can identify the best technologies to employ for the project.  Although RIAs are faster to build than desktop applications however this is more time-consuming than a traditional web site.

RIAs although critiqued in lacking flexibility in design criteria, immaturity of the technology and some security concerns still had proven itself at this early stage worthy to be explored. After all, aren’t all website design companies driven by only one purpose?  It is to provide an enhanced online experience for users and prospects and at the same time increase users loyalty, leads and sales.
