Things to Remember When Building Your Website
Building a website these days have become easier as time goes. This is due to some site building tools available to the would-be “webmasters.” With the much excitement over starting one’s site and showing it to the world, simple tips and reminders are easily overlooked. These things could be important because by following these you can increase the over-all performance of your site. So keep these tips in mind as you start building your own niche in cyberspace.
1. Check Browser Compatibility – so you’ve finished building your site and it really looks good on IE. Then, it’s ready for the web. Well, it’s not as automatic as that. Remember to check compatibility with other browsers, too. Try viewing your finished site in a different browser like Netscape. Some compatibility issues, especially in formatting, can severely damage an otherwise carefully constructed layout. And that still doesn’t include other compatibility issues.
2. Resolution Flexibility – it’s easy to assume that when it comes to web site, one size fits all, especially concerning resolution. Well, this is true to some extent, and a lesser extent at that. A layout designed on a particular resolution and viewed in another resolution could spell some trouble. Be conscious about making your site look good in different resolutions. Tip: when building your site, use percentage in describing sizes, not pixels.
3. Be size conscious – you’re doing a big favor to a visitor of your site if your pages load fast. This is done by reducing the file size of the page. So minimize the things you put in the page. Don’t be too fancy like putting all those flash objects in your site. You might want to have your visitors drool in envy over your site design but they might be drooling because they have fallen asleep waiting for it to load.
4. Place links effectively – organize the links of your site, especially the main page. Put important links in the most conspicuous place, like at the top. If it’s not enough, use the right and/or left side of the page. Make navigation through the site eay. As much as possible, make the entire website pages accessible from the main page.
5. Be easy on the fonts – don’t be too playful when it comes to fonts. At least match your fonts with the mood of what you are writing. A text on philosophy in Comic Sans colored green really isn’t a thing someone will take seriously. We’ll unless you don’t want to be taken seriously then you could just do anything. For the rest of the population, a simple, professional-looking font will always do the trick for every occasion.
6. Don’t clutter your site – as with your links, the contents of the pages of your site should be organized as much as possible. You may be gunning for an eye candy but you could arrive at an eyesore. Don’t put too much picture or text that the page will look cramped. Leave breathing spaces (read: white spaces) to make the site neat and organize. Optimize the page by concentrating more on content rather than over-the-top design.
7. Fix links – the least functional a site can get is when the links don’t work. Check regularly for broken links and update them. This prevents the visitor from assuming that the site is down altogether, an easy assumption when links are broken.
