First Things First – Register Your Domain

If you are planning to design a website, whether personal or for your business, the very first thing you are going to need to do is register your domain name.

If your site is a standalone business, that is simple – once you have decided on a name that is available, you register it, and get going with the design.

However, if you already have a “brick and mortar” business, that you need a site for, it is a little trickier. The best bet is to get a domain name that reflects your company’s name, or your core business. For instance, if your company is called Bob’s Widgets, a good idea would be to name your site bobswidgets.com. That way, people looking specifically for your business can find it, and those looking for widgets in general would also find your site.

This brings us to checking the availability of names. Sometimes, the name you want is not available, meaning it has been registered by another person or company already. You have two choices in this case – change the name, or, instead of .com, go for .net, .biz, or some other extension.

Sometimes, if the site name you want has already been registered, but there is no page online, the name may belong to a company or person who registers names for resale. In that case, you may be able to purchase the name you want from them.

How, you may ask, do you find out any of this? Well, the easiest way is to go to a site called Whois.com, and type in the name you want. It will show you, within a few minutes, whether your name is available, and if not, what variations you could use.

It may seem like a lot of work to do before you even get started, but think about it this way – if you are, for example, designing an ecommerce site, and using your choice of name in the logos and content, you would have to change all of that later if the name you chose is not available! Not ideal, and certainly more time-consuming.

The last word on domain names? Keep it short, and easy to remember. Think EBay, Amazon, Facebook and other big names. Simple and uncomplicated works!
