Psychology of Color and Website Design
It has been fairly well established that colors can alter or enhance the viewer’s mood, so why not utilize the psychology of color in your website design.
Although the meanings of color may vary from culture to culture, basic color theory remains the same. So, when choosing colors for your website, use a color scheme complementary to the message you are trying to get across to your audience. Bright reds and yellow will do very little for a website dealing with meditation, for example.
As a website designer you should be aware of the psychological associations of the major colors:
YELLOW - cheerfulness, playfulness, amusement
ORANGE – youth*, fun, comfort, creativity, affordability
RED - love, impulse, warning, action, excitement, adventure
PURPLE - royalty, luxury, dreams, fantasy
BLUE - calmness, trustworthiness, success, professionalism
GREEN** - money, nature, healing, harmony
PINK - innocence, youthfulness, softness, tenderness
WHITE - purity, simplicity, innocence, cleanliness
GREY - neutrality, indifference
BROWN - earth, nature, simplicity.
BLACK - mystery, darkness, secrecy
*Website designers have found orange is particularly favoured amongst the younger set
** Website designers have also found that green is the least popular of colors when used in a website. So use sparingly and offset with white.
When designing your website, it is a good idea to test your web design with three or four different color schemes – run them by a few friends and observe the results. Is your website color-scheme enhancing the message you are trying to get across? Or are the colors of your website design at odds with the textual message?
To achieve a great website design you will need at least a basic understanding of contrasting, sympathetic and complementary color schemes. Identify your target audience and ensure the message is enhanced by the colors used in your website design.
