The Problem With Free Hosting
If you’re designing your own website for a new business, online or off, the temptation is to try to do everything as cheaply as possible, or ideally free! While that is certainly possible in terms of getting free or open source software, or even finding a cheap or free domain, hosting is one area where free offers are not a good choice. Here are a few of the problems you will encounter.
Advertising
You’ve heard the saying “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” right? This is true about free hosting too. Someone has to pay for the hosting, and you aren’t going to, advertisers will. You’ll end up with forced ads and banners overrunning your site, and you might not even have a choice who advertises!
Stability
If you’re getting something for free, you’re hardly likely to complain much if things go wrong, are you? On the other hand, you might, but you’re unlikely to get very far!
Free hosting offers come with little or no guarantee as to when your site will be online. They also offer little in the way of support if you have a problem, and their security level is minimal or non-existent! Imagine you have an e-commerce site that’s rarely “up” and has no security or SSL certificate. Not likely to get a lot of customers are you?
Sub domains
Many times, the hosting described as free is a sub domain of another site. This is visible in the URL for your site, for example www.yourcompany.hostcompany.com. Again, if you’re running an online business, or any business for that matter, this looks unprofessional. Not the image you want to project!
The bottom line with free hosting is that if it’s for a personal page, or even a page relating to a online group or community, you might get away with it. If you’re planning to venture into online business, or looking to promote your brick and mortar business online, steer clear of it!
If you are going to spend a lot of time and energy crafting a site, or spend money outsourcing your website to a professional designer, its definitely worth investing in good quality hosting, and with some very reasonable packages out there these days, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg either!
