When people think about web accessibility, they usually think about how their website will load on various browsers, whether their web host is down all the time, or even if their bandwidth is too slow. Seldom to webmasters discuss how they can make their websites accessible to people with disabilities. Yet, it is a critical consideration. For example, how can a deaf person buy from a website that concentrates mostly on audio?
Adjusting the website design to cater to people with disabilities will not only be good for business, it can also increase sales. Some of the disabilities you can adjust the website for include:
• Color Blindness – there are actually various types of color blindness. Some people can only distinguish monochrome colors (black and white), some have a hard time identifying red and green, and others have the blue-yellow blindness. The different colors of your website can appear entirely different from your intention. So as much as possible, don’t make your entire site completely dependent on color (such as using an indistinguishable color for your text link).
• Poor Eyesight – there is a significant number of people with poor eyesight including those who need eyeglasses and elderly people. As a webmaster, it is possible to cater to this group. Some suggestions to improve site accessibility include using larger text. Certain sites contain very small print that even a person with 20/20 vision has a hard time reading. Some make the mistake of using small fonts because they designed the site using a large monitor. So it becomes difficult to read on a laptop or an average sized computer. Being focused on sizing, images, and overall aesthetics can work wonders. Using contrasting colors for as the background is recommended as well.
• Blindness – most people don’t realize that blind people can surf the internet. They are actually able to do so because of an application known as screen readers. Basically, it functions by reading aloud everything contained in the website. But using it can be a tedious process. Its users have no choice but to listen to every line being read to them. Make the process a lot easier for them by creating relevant description and interesting content, get rid of the fluff on your web page.
