What Does It Mean to Point Domain at Your Host?

If you are new to web design, or are building and uploading your own website, some of the terminology can be a little bit confusing.

The term “point your domain at your host,” sounds a little obscure doesn’t it? It is actually a fairly simple term though, to describe the process that allows your domain registrar to find your site, and the public to find your site online. The process involved goes a little bit like this:

• After weighing up the pros and cons of the various hosting options, you choose a provider.
• Once you have registered, signed up and paid the necessary fees, you will receive and email with usernames, passwords and other bits and pieces.
• One of those cryptic little codes will be your host’s name server. It should look a little like this: ns.yourhost.com.
• If you have not got an email, or the name server is not specified on the email you got, try looking on your hosting company’s help page, or even emailing them.
• Once you have identified the name server, you can log in on your domain registrar’s site, using the username and passwords they’ve provided.
• Look for options to configure your domain, and once you have found it (they all work a little differently) enter the information you have been given.
• To test, try to access your domain by typing your website’s domain into the search bar on your browser. If it is not visible yet, and can’t be found, do not worry, since internet wide change can take a few days to take effect!
• If your site still is not visible within a few days though, contact your hosting company and registrar, to find out if there are any problems.

And that is it. A simple process of telling your domain name where to find your site on the web. But it is this little process that makes your site visible to the internet using public once it’s been uploaded, so it’s also fairly critical!
