Perfecting Web Design through Fonts
Your use of fonts is a crucial thing when it comes to designing a web page. The choice of font styles you use can either make or break your website so exercise caution especially when experimenting with fonts. A common mistake that beginner web designers make is using too many font styles to create a “cool” design. But when it comes to fonts in websites, sticking to the basics is the key.
Miscellaneous Tips
As much as possible, use only 3 to 4 font styles in a page, and keep it consistent all throughout. If your headings are two sizes larger than your text, keep it that way for the rest of your page.
Some web designers want to stress a point in the middle of their text by changing the font face, color, or size of the catchy phrase. This is acceptable, provided that you don’t do this for every single point you want to stress out. Do this only if it is appropriate.
Sans-Serif vs. Serif Fonts
If you’ve had print design courses, you can probably recall that sans-serif fonts should only be used for headlines. Sans-serif fonts are those fonts with no hooks and details at the end of every stroke in the letters. However, this is not applicable for the Web. Paper or print is not the same with computer monitors, and what works for one will not work for the other. Since computer monitors do not have the same resolution as paper, serif fonts could crowd up and blur together on the screen, causing the reader to have a more difficult time in reading.
That’s why sans-serif font styles are preferred when it comes to Web design. Examples of these fonts include Helvetica, Arial, Trebuchet, and Geneva.
But there is also an instance when using serif fonts is applicable. Serif fonts are best used for print-friendly versions of your page. Because your text will be appearing on paper, the serif fonts will be much easier to read. Examples of serif font styles include Times New Roman and Garamond.
Other Fonts
When using fantasy fonts or cursive to enhance the design of your page, be extra careful. Do so only when necessary, and keep it to a minimum. Extravagant fonts could be confusing, and even irritating to some readers. Also, not all computers will have the fonts you use on your site.
