Although I was not a good literature student back in my school years; metaphors, imagery and similes have never stopped to fascinate me. Everyday I sit down on my couch and regurgitate on web design the more it unfold to me as being almost similar to life issues. Many people do detach completely web design from the issues that do face us in our day to day life but in my opinion the same winning strategies one would apply to be a victor, do look very similar to the ones in web design. Well am not urging anyone to think that web design is his life or even take it as life. No this is only a career!! And it does not define anybody’s life and it should be taken as such.

Back to my point, I did mean that for one to succeed in life issues, he needs to be observant to some things. This concept does also apply to web design, for one to compete effectively in this field; he needs to play to some rules. In this article I discuss what a web designer should do to come up with pages that are friendly to search engines.

There is no point for one to build a website unless there are visitors who are coming in. A major source of traffic for many sites on the Internet is the search engines such as Google, MSN, Yahoo!, Altavista and so many others. Hence, by designing a site that is search engine friendly one will be able to rank easily in the search engines and obtain many visitors.

Major search engines do use programs that are called crawlers or robots so as to index websites to list on their search result pages. They do follow links to a page, then reads the content of the page as well as record it in their own database, thus pulling up the listing as people do search for it.

If one wants to make his site indexed easily, he should avoid using frames on his website. Frames would only confuse search engine robots and they may even abandon his site because of that. Moreover, frames do make it difficult for users to bookmark a particular page on ones site without using long and complicated scripts.

One should not present important information in form of Flash movies or in images. Search engine robots can only read the text on ones source code so if he presents important words in Flash movies as well as images rather than in textual form, his search engine ranking will be affected so dramatically.

One should use meta tags accordingly on each and every page of his site so that search engine robots can know at first glance what that specific page is about and whether to index it or not. By using meta tags, one is making the search engine robot’s job very easy so they will crawl as well as index his site more frequently.

One should stop using wrong HTML tags such as to style his page. One should use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) instead as they are more effective as well as efficient. By using CSS, one can eliminate redundant HTML tags and make his pages much lighter as well as faster to load.
