Optimizing Meta Tags

Most web designers don’t pay much attention to meta tags—those descriptive tags the appear on the section of a page. But more than your design, meta tags play a big role in site popularity and search engine rankings. And in the competitive world of online business, these two are vital tools for staying ahead.

Meta tags don’t magically push you to the top of the results page, but they do help you move up. There are dozens of meta tags in the coding world, but only four of them really matter to web designers. Read on to find out what they are.

Title tag

Although it’s technically an HTML tag, the title tag is closely intertwined with meta functions. Basically, the text you put in the tag appears in the browser bar of whoever’s viewing it. But its secondary function relates more to search engines, and that’s what web designers often focus on. Search engine crawlers use the title tag to determine how to rank you and put your site in context. That’s why, when you search for “web design schools,” sites that have those exact words in their titles always get listed first.

Description tag

The description tag tells search engine crawlers what users can expect from your site. On a typical listing, the site title appears first, followed by a brief description. This description is the text you place in between the description tags. It’s your way of telling web searchers what to expect when they click on your link. Without a description tag, the crawlers usually generate their own description or use other text on your website as reference.

Keywords tag

As the name suggests, the keywords tag tells search engines which keywords or key phrases to associate with your site. Some search engines have actually been reworked to ignore this tag, but it can still help reinforce the keywords you have in your main content. This works especially if your page has keyword-rich content to start with, as it boosts the strength of the keywords for certain search engine crawlers.

Robots tag

Despite the swanky name, the robots tag is actually pretty straightforward. What it does is tell the crawlers not to index certain pages of your site. This is useful for sections that you want to keep private, such as clients’ addresses and contact information. You can also use it to exclude pages whose content might mess up your site description in the listing, like entries on customer forms.
