HTML editors

Aptana: Often dubbed the Dreamweaver of open-source, this powerful text-based editor is preferred by many professionals. The clean, straightforward interface allows faster coding and easier spotting of errors.

Amaya: If you prefer a WYSIWYG editor, Amaya is one of your best bets. The program works with HTML/CSS specifications and has most of the major Dreamweaver features. It was developed by the W3C itself, so you can be sure every page is 100% compliant.

WYM Editor: This web-based program is geared towards XHTML design and is also W3C-compliant. The concept behind WYM is to focus on the structure and code rather than the visual layout.

Image editing

Gimp: Originally made for Linux, this program is the open-source equivalent of Photoshop. You can also download Gimpshop, a modified version designed for people more familiar with the Adobe interface.

Inkscape: This program supports scalable vector graphics (SVG) files, which can be resized to any scale without losing image quality. This makes it ideal for Flash, interactive design, and images designed for HTML mapping.

Coding tools

Allchars: If you’re often stumped by accents and symbols, this program can come in pretty handy. Enter any special character and Allchars will generate the appropriate HTML code.

CSS Creator: This tool generates code for CSS layout frameworks. A similar program, Firdramatic, is particularly useful for two-column and three-column layouts.

Firefox Web Developer Toolbar: Despite the name, this add-on is actually as valuable to designers as it is to developers. The toolbar allows you to view CSS code right on the page, turn of the style and formatting, and check your DIV tags to see how the page is structured.
