The open source software movement is revolutionizing computing, and it looks set to do the same for web design!

While commercial concerns may be disturbed by the OS movement, which seeks to make computers, software, and the internet, accessible to all, its great news for Joe Public!

A recent search on the internet revealed hundreds of thousands of open source web design sites, and nearly as many offering well designed, free web site templates to download and customize.

All of these sites work on basically the same premise – you browse the gallery of available designs, select those that you like best, and download them, for free.

Another site, CSS Tinderbox, does not offer complete site templates, but they do offer basic “barebones” templates that you can download, build on and customize, rather than starting completely from scratch. There are of course many, many other sites out there that offer the same service, and all it takes is a little time to find the right one for you.

If you are feeling a little more ambitious, and have the appropriate knowledge, there are literally thousands of free, open source web design software packages, which you can download and use to create your own, 100% original website.

Html editors like Bluefish and Quanta Plus are free alternatives to commercial products, and graphics receive the same treatment with packages like Inkscape and GIMPscape. Nvu offers a package on par with Microsoft’s FrontPage, and for FTP uploads, there are packages like Filezilla.

None of these packages is for the novice however, so it is still advisable to seek professional assistance if you have no idea where to start, but they do offer great options on the web design software front for those that have some working knowledge.

Its clear therefore – web design is no longer only for the well heeled. Everyone can have a website, get their business on the web, and reap the benefits. It just takes a little homework, and a few strategic downloads!

Therefore, if you have some web design knowledge and skill get out there and surf the web. You’d be surprised at the hidden gems you’ll find in the open source software arena!
