When Nice Sucks and Simple Rule

What really makes a website rock? Or another way to go about it is to ask what those popular and successful sites have that others don’t? It’s not just the layout, the content or the usability…but the totality of all these components and the impact it creates to the user when put together.

There are several sites that look really glamorous, heavy on design with superb graphics and fantastic layout but they are seldom visited. These sites are really nice to look at but often heavy in size and take a while to load so only a few actually have the patience to wait and see the whole page. Imagine having to spend a number of minutes to navigate through the whole site with such heavy graphics. Instead of waiting on that particular site, many other sites can instead be explored with those precious minutes. Many users would rather close the ‘slow’ website and look for another one which would give me the same information they are looking for in a shorter time. Another downside on these heavily designed websites is their usability, or lack of it. Not all internet users are geeks who know exactly how to navigate through the whole site. It is therefore a must for every website to be user-friendly at all costs. There are really nice and helpful websites on the web which are ineffective because no one
knows how to find their way around them. A data driven site is no good if the user has to spend minutes finding what they are looking for?

On the other side, there are these sites which are really simple yet they manage to be successful and popular through the years. What’s their secret? Simplicity and usability that is! A website with nothing much on it except for the really important stuff users need is more appealing to most users as they know they’re getting into a site that’s direct to the point and data-driven. It is not however enough to stay basic and plain as it is also important to consider usability on top of everything else which is something what “good” websites never fail to consider.
