When to Use Music on Your Website

When to Use Music on Your Website
One of the first, groundbreaking developments in HTML and basic web design was the imbedded, auto-run, midi music player. Many early websites included tinny versions of Greensleeves and Motzart’s Requiem playing as you viewed the website and the only way to turn them off was to turn off your speakers or exit the website.
This fashion quickly faded, but was reborn again when the “feel” and “vibe” of websites began to come into consideration. Since music and sound is used to set the mood of film, television and elevators, it should follow that website viewers could be influenced by sound. So came a resurgence of music players, imbedded and auto-playing, but occasionally giving the viewer an option to switch them off. The music wasn’t midi, -it was mp3 and therefore “quality”.
As it happened, auto-playing, high quality mp3s did not give a soothing, mood-invoking atmosphere. Instead, they were, and still remain, considered an annoyance and an effective way to reduce quality traffic on your site.
Music on websites is useful for those in industries that need to showcase their sound as part of their business – audio engineers, film professionals, musicians and composures. There are exceptions to this rule of who can have music and who cannot, but if you can do without it, your site will be better for its exclusion.
For those who must include music on their site, the professional thing is to give the user the option to turn the music on, not off. Most people listen to their own music when surfing the web. Many office workers use the internet when they should be working, and a sudden blaring rendition of Rhianna’s Umberrla from their tinny, office speakers is going to give the game away, and will certainly reduce the chances of them visiting your site again.
Let the user know how to start the music player and make it clear how to turn it off. Other than that, stay away from music on websites.
