The Use of Meta Tags in Web Design

Now, the most valuable feature that a Meta tag can present the owner of a website is the ability to control on how it is described by a search engine. It also offers the ability to stop the indexing of pages. This article presents an overview of Meta tags and their use in web design.

* What are Meta tags?
Meta tags are the inserted information found at the “head” area of your web pages. Information in that area of your web pages cannot be seen by those viewing your pages in browsers other than the title tag. For example, Meta tags can tell a browser what “character set” to use. It can also tell whether a web page rated itself in terms of adult content.
Meta tags are not required in making web pages. A number of pages don’t use the tag at all. Briefly speaking, the Meta tag is sometimes used by search engines for the creation of an accurate list of sites in their indexes.
By producing a homepage and registering the URL on a search engine, their spider programmes will stalk along to your site to index it. Each of the different search engines does this process in slightly different manners. Obviously, not all search engines work this way.
You should ensure that your opening paragraph is carefully written to make sure it accurately reflects what your site covers. However, you may be able to exert a certain amount of control over how your site is indexed by the use of the Meta tag.

* What does a Meta tag look like?
Meta tag elements are found at the top of your document, just after the <TITLE> element. It follows the usual form of tags, i.e.  <META name=”something” content=”something else”> but note that you don’t have to have a </META> at the end of the tag. Line breaks should not be included in the tag.
