Managing and Tracking Your Website Traffic

Designing a great site, maintaining it, keeping content fresh, promoting it, and getting traffic all seem like a lot of work, and the truth is, they are. Chances are, if you’ve gone to the effort to create a really great website, you’re going to want to keep track of the traffic you’re getting. Here are a few ways you can do that:

Cookies

Much maligned, due to recent dubious use, cookies are nonetheless useful for tracking visitors to your site.

Cookies with a unique ID number, loaded onto a visitor’s computer on their first visit, and logging their activity on each subsequent visit, does allow you to analyze how many people visited your site, and how many are repeat visitors.

Be warned though when choosing this option – many users block cookies, or simply don’t visit sites that use cookies, due to privacy and security issues.

Server Logs

Your webserver probably keeps a log of where they send information to, and by using this log, you can identify visitors to your site, and sometimes even the general region they came from.

You can also use the information to figure out how many different visitors you had, and how many pages each visitor viewed, giving you a better overall picture. If that sounds like a lot of work, relax! There is software available that will analyze the data for you, and create graphs or charts of the statistics!

Require Registration

This is a very simple method. Requiring users to register to view all or some of your site allows you not only to determine how many users you have, but can also help in building your email marketing list – they would have to provide some personal details, and including a privacy policy that stipulates that you will send them occasional mailers can really make all the difference!

Other methods, like random surveys or using a service like Google’s Webmaster tools, can also provide accurate information regarding your site’s popularity and traffic. Survey’s have the added benefit that you can enquire details like age, location and other personal information, which, if handled anonymously, most visitors will provide. This gives you a very good snapshot of your site’s demographics!

Tracking site popularity and traffic is not an idle business though – if traffic is growing, you probably have nothing to worry about, but if it levels out, or starts to fall, it’s time to look at your website, and make some changes!
