In an age where we’re always in a hurry, function tends to override style—and that certainly applies to web design. People prefer fast, easy content to eye candy. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up style altogether. After all, Web 2.0 is all about giving you the best of both worlds. There are lots of ways to make your site both usable and attractive. Here are some of them.

Smaller images. Graphics make up for much of the loading time on most websites. By keeping your images small, you make the site load faster while keeping the quality of the picture. Resize your images on an image editor—HTML resizing only squeezes the same amount of pixels into a smaller area, so the picture appears squeezed and blurry. Use thumbnails if you have lots if images and need to show them in full resolution.

Soft colors. Some colors are attractive, but too hard on the eyes. Red and orange are probably the best examples. Stick to soft, muted shades that give color but don’t shout out of the page. Pastel colors, light grays, and earth tones usually work best—they make a good contrast against the text and can go with most color schemes. Also, don’t use more than three colors on the page, as it makes the site look too busy.

Readable text. Use simple, readable fonts for your main text, and don’t turn your site into a font sampler. As a general rule, there shouldn’t be more than two different fonts on a page: one for the main content, and one for the headings and subheadings. Choose fonts that more people are likely to have, such as Arial and Times New Roman. Set alternatives so that the browser doesn’t revert to an ugly default font if yours isn’t available.

Easy navigation. People don’t like clicking through several pages to find what they need.  Link important pages such as sales and checkout on the front page, and spare your readers the lengthy forms and options. Put a fixed menu on the top or side of the page, so people can easily navigate to other sections as needed.
