Making Your Site Printer or Email Friendly

If you’ve got great content (and we’re sure you do) sometime or another, someone who stumbles onto your site is going to want to either print it out, or send it to a friend (or even themselves!)

Making Content Printer Friendly

You’ve probably seen the little printer icon that has become the universal symbol for printing content on most sites. It’s best to stick to that icon, since it’s so recognizable.

Place the icon somewhere near the top or bottom of your content, with or without text, along the lines of “print this page.” This makes it easy to find.

As for the mechanics of printing, we all know that some site content looks awful when you try to print it of a site. Edges get cut off, or graphics print too. Not ideal – no one likes to waste printer ink on text they can’t read, or graphics they don’t want!

To get around this, if you are using CSS, you can create an alternate style sheet called “print”. Essentially, this creates an alternative style, behind your page style, that is optimized for printing.

Making Content Email Friendly

There are various types of code you can use to create an automatic email from your site. What’s important is to get the sender (your visitor’s) email address and name, and their friend’s email address and name. Adding a block for alternative comments or additional information is a nice touch too.

Having this kind of functionality on your site can actually do wonders for your traffic – if someone sends their friend a link to your site, with a message from your site along the lines of “Your friend X thought you might find this interesting” and a link, chance are, they will click through to your site.

And if many people do this, each bringing one new friend into your traffic numbers, you’ll end up with a popular site!

Of course, as with anything, it’s attention to small details like these that matter. If you aren’t making it easy for people to send content from your site, or even to print it, they’re unlikely to do so, and you lose potential new visitors!
