Making Sure Your Site Has Great Content
A critical, and often ignored, factor in the success of any web design project is that the site has great content.
Content can include any one or more of the following: written pieces, video and audio files (such as MP3’s) and pictures or graphics. However, because it’s the text aspect of the site that usually attracts visitors, and keeps them on your site, it’s often the most critical to make sure you have great writing on your site.
When it comes to content though, it’s not only what you include that matters – it’s how easily visitors can access those pieces. This is where user-friendly navigation is key, as well as using SEO to make sure that internet users can actually find your content when searching!
Content also touches other areas of web design, for example, choice of font and colour. There’s no use having great content, and your visitors struggle to read it! Make sure your content is in a clear font, and uses high contrast between backgrounds and text, to make reading easier.
As for layout, this is another area where content and other aspects of web design collide. Your textual and other content (graphics etcetera) should be laid out in a clear, inviting and easy to follow manner. Keeping in mind the way that internet users are used to reading text, in lines of around seven to ten words, will also make the reading easier, and should be borne in mind when designing the layout.
Maintaining your content is also critical. If your content is hard to find, poorly organized, or outdated, you will lose visitors, who will become frustrated, and look elsewhere. Pay very careful attention therefore, to how your site is organized, and make sure it’s done so as to make finding content as easy as possible, and that when visitors reach the content that interests them, it’s relevant!
