What Is An Intranet Site?
You may have heard about an intranet site, but do you really know what they are? Most people are well versed in the internet, websites and their uses these days, but few realize that there are options, like the intranet and it’s counterpart, the extranet, that can provide secure online communications, and access to information, for the employees of an organization, in the case of intranet, or even their clients, suppliers and other role players, in the case of an extranet.
An intranet or an extranet actually works on exactly the same principles as an ordinary website, being designed, built, and hosted in much the same way. The only major difference is that access, unlike a website that is completely public, is restricted to employees only, or employees and approved outsiders in the case of an extranet.
These intra or extranets can also be integrated into a company website, requiring the users to log in to specific “members only” sections. Access to these parts of the site would be protected by firewalls and encryption. They could also, however, be completely stand-alone networks in their own right.
The benefits for a company are great, in terms of improved communications between branches, among others, some of which are listed here:
• Intranets improve corporate productivity, as information is stored on the intranet, and can be accessed quickly and easily, as well as from remote locations, using website like search functions.
• Since intranets are available around the clock, information is accessible to employees in various parts of the world, regardless of the time zone, when they need it.
• Communication and collaboration on projects are improved, even among teams that are scattered around the globe.
• Standard corporate documentation, such as employee manuals, company policies, ISO compliance documents and others can be stored on the intranet, where they are accessible to all employees, rather than printing large, cumbersome documents, or worse, trying to email over large files!
• They are cost effective, and help to bring the ideal of the paperless office a little closer to reality.
Because of these and many other features, and intranet is a great choice for large companies, or companies that have many branches spread over a wide geographical area, where conventional networks would not be practical.
If you do own or work in a large organization therefore, maybe it’s time to consider setting up your own corporate intranet, and taking advantage of the benefits.
