Seasoned entrepreneurs know the importance of good design in internet marketing. For one thing, they know that first impressions are everything—and that customers can judge a website in the span of two seconds.

But web designers aren’t entrepreneurs. More often than not, they commit little errors that make a major impact on sales. If you’re designing for an internet marketing site, here are five classic mistakes to watch out for.

“Invisible” products. Customers won’t buy what they can’t see. Don’t bury product images in the second or third page; rather, it should be the first thing they see upon opening your site. Remember, you only have a two-second window to grab their attention. The right image and placement can make all the difference between a visitor that buys and one that simply clicks away.

Shelf-like pages. Just as lack of images can turn customers away, too many of them will do pretty much the same thing. A shelf layout is one where product images are scaled down so that they can fit as much as possible into the page. Even with a well-structured table, this can make the page look cluttered. And since the images are barely visible, they can hardly capture the customer’s interest.

Flashy banners. There’s nothing bad about page ads, as long as they stay in the right place. But the problem with many sites is that there’s almost as much advertising as there is content. People want their content fast and simple, and the last thing they need is a site littered with links that get in the way. So keep the ads simple and make sure they keep a clear coast for what you’re really selling.

Bad copy. Images may draw the readers in, but it’s your words that really get them to buy. If you’re not good with words, get someone to write for you—it’ll cost a bit more, but good content is well worth your money. A good sales pitch on your front page can really boost your conversion figures. If you rely mostly on search engine traffic, write a quick pitch for your meta description tag as well.
