Improving the Speed of Loading a Web Site
A web site though well designed may prove unpopular with users. If they are unable to access it fast enough, they may want to consider other alternatives. For this reason it is important to ensure the site is designed in a manner that it loads very fast. This way, it will take users less time to get their needs attended to.
One of the things that cause delays when a site is loading is the use of too many images. Images have varying sizes which many browsers may consider heavy. The higher the number of images one uses the bigger the site is likely to be. The designer may opt to use fewer images while working on the site. Alternatively they could choose image formats that allow greater compression. This will allow the images to be featured while taking very little space. Even then most of the content is better presented as HTML.
The organization of information for a web site is critical. When designing a site, one should think of the characteristics that users are likely to have. This will enable them to have the information organized to enhance effectiveness. At the same time the designer will enhance brevity. The designer can ensure such qualities by looking out for such applications such as tables, charts and graphs. These formats are very effective in summarizing information hence saving on space. They also help in avoiding repetition.
Icons communicate very powerful messages on a web site. They are therefore considered a necessity by most web designers. However, much caution must be exercised when choosing and posting icons. Choosing large images when designing icons will negate the actual purpose that icons are supposed to play. They are meant to be brief and save the designer the need for bigger illustrations. Furthermore, they enhance the navigation of a site.
Flash has proved popular with many web designers. However, it needs to be used sparingly on a site. While its display will be very attractive, the more flash one uses, the longer it will take the site to load. It is therefore important for web designers to use flash within the HTML site. This gives the site a balance between appearance as well as usability more so in regard to speed.
Background images have proved a popular way of saving time and space on web site. Web designers are encouraged to use background images on headers as well as footers. This works better than using large images for similar purposes. Background images, as the name suggests not only provide the background but can also take on other roles as highlighted above. Fortunately background images are not necessarily supposed to be cheap.
The key to faster loading times also depends on how well one uses their web design knowledge. It is suggested that one uses only those programs or software that are confident of working with. This delivers content in the easiest possible manner hence allowing more flexibility and creativity for the designer. CSS styles have been recommended during web design. Even then they will only be effective if the web designer is well versed with the CSS. Even then whatever features one uses should supplement HTML as it has proved reliable in ensuring faster speeds for web sites.
