Improving Readability during Web Site Construction

Every single effort that web designers make during web design is to boost the site’s ability to communicate certain information. No other media communicates on a site better than the text content. There would be no need to post text content on a site if one does not intend that it be read.  There are various ways through web designers can enhance the readability of content on a web site.

Lines should be kept at considerable length. Usually a length of not more than six hundred pixels is considered ideal. The text is also better presented when centered. Pages need to be designed with all screen sizes and web browsers in mind. The content must have a fluid nature thus having that ability to contract or expand accordingly depending on the screen resolution where the site is opened.

While much focus is put on content, it should never be forgotten that page size affects readability on the site. Page sizes can be tricky to determine especially given the fact that new screen resolutions are coming up every day. To be on the safer side pages must be made to fit screen resolutions that are as small as 770 pixels. By trying out the screen appearance during the design one can create a page size that is appropriate. Fluidity may also help in this regard.

The background against which text is posted makes determines the ease with which visitors will read it. As a general rule, contrasting colors work towards better text display. Alternatively simple backgrounds could enhance the display just fine. The choice of color combinations is equally important as some are just not adequate.

The effect of light may also serve to aid readers. Light appearing on background effects needs to appear simple with a choice between dark or light rather than a mixture of both. Text size can also be increased to improve its readability. Small sized text fonts may appear to force readers to strain while reading text on the site. This may be detrimental to the site owner. Other options include bolding the text opting for clearer fonts. It’s not advisable to post text against a textured background or an image. This will give visitors hard time to read.

Line spacing needs to be considered for an increase. This task, also referred to as leading is important for reasons other than enhanced readability. It dictates the general outlook of a web page. Besides it is used to allow readers some breathing time before embarking on the following page. To ensure that leading is enabled one must specify the figures in terms of percentage. This can be located among the CSS commands. Once leading has been set for the lead cell, this figure can be used as the default.

The web designer should be aware of the effect of multiple caps in the same word. When both small and big letters are used, there should be a reason for the same. Such lettering is only allowed if one wants to draw attention to the words in question. They are therefore better used on headlines, titles and sub titles. The multiple casing can be used with other color and light effects to enhance the appearance of such items.
