How to improve your site ratings
Does your website show up on a search engine when you search for relevant key words? Or is it ranked way below your expectations? How can I make my website more popular? These and more questions need valid answers if your business is to compete equally in this growing field of e-commerce. Before we find out how to improve site ranking, we need to find out how search engines operate.
How search engines rate sites
Search engines like goggle or yahoo can quickly and reliably sort through thousands of web pages to bring you the right one. How do they do it? All search engines use a certain algorithm to rank web pages. These rules mostly involve counting the key words in a page and the location of the keywords.
The location of key words is given more weight. Logic dictates that a page title with the key word is more relevant than one without. Also, one with keywords close to the top of the page like in headings warrants more consideration. The web crawlers check for words in the html <title> and <h> tags. Different engines will use different ratings for these values, hence no two engines return the same results.
The number of keywords per page is also relevant. Pages with a higher frequency of key words are deemed more accurate matches. This does not mean however that simply using a key word in your site hundreds of times will boost your ratings. On the contrary, search engines may end up not rating your site as this is considered as spam. What about using the meta tags? although still considered by search engines, they are not given much weight as people may think. Misuse of these tags has led search engines to use different algorithms.
Different engines use different variations in their algorithms. Some may index different pages more often than others, while others may index lots of information than others. Due to increase in spamming and improvements in search engine optimization techniques, many engines employ other factors in rating websites.
External factors
External factors considered by search engines are factors beyond the webmaster’s control. Things that the website owner cannot easily influence to his advantage. One search item is link analysis. This involves analyzing the links in a web page and determining their relevance to the key words. The search engine can thus determine what the web page contents are related to. This greatly helps identify spamming. The number of sites that link to your page are also considered. A highly referenced page will generally receive better ratings than one that is not referenced.
Click through measurement is another external factor employed. The engines modify their site ratings depending on the user response. If certain pages that are highly ranked don’t get clicked often by web surfers, they are dropped further down in ranking. Web sites further down that receive higher attention are pushed up the table.
Improvement tips
After considering briefly how search engines rate sites, we can take home a few tips to help improve our site rankings. Include key words in your title and in the heading, repeat key words appropriately, have meaningful links and most important of all: Create a site that will leave the user saying “I got exactly what I was looking for!”
