How Important is the Homepage?

Homepage is a necessary part in any website, although it is not as important as others. How come? First of all, the homepage is the place where people go to in order to access a different page in the site. They go to the website’s homepage to search for a deeper part of the site; hence they spend very little time here.

The homepage is like the table of contents and introduction part in a book. People rarely read the introduction, and spend only a few minutes, or even seconds, scanning the table of contents for the things they want. The same goes for your homepage. Oftentimes, people are able to directly access the page they want to go to without having to pass by the homepage. This happens when they make use of search engines which give them the direct links to the webpage itself.

It is important to remember that you should not bombard your homepage with information, because viewers seldom read introductions. However, your homepage represents the website as a whole, so you must design it in such a way that it would be attractive and yet useful. It gives the first impression, so you should make it simple, yet professionally made.

Take note that your homepage should first and foremost be easy to navigate. You wouldn’t want to confuse your user at the onset. Don’t make things complicated just to do a simple task. Also, properly organize the homepage especially if you have a big website. Bigger websites have more web pages, therefore the subpage links must be properly indexed in the homepage.

However, do not focus most of your time developing the homepage. Keep in mind that although it is necessary, it is not the most important part of your site. The most important aspects are of course the pages that have the websites content. These are the ones you should focus on improving. Search engines usually check for the content of the site itself, and not how the homepage is designed.  Improve you content to search engine ranking and therefore efficiently drive in more traffic.
