The Importance of White space in Web Design
Most people think of blank pages whenever you refer to white space. But what is white space really? It is the empty space between elements in a page. There are actually two types: the macro white space, and the micro white space. The spaces in between major parts, such as title, are those considered macro white space, while the less important, such as between letters in a text, would essentially fall under micro white space.
How does white space affect the design of the page? First of all, if you look at something fully stuffed, you tend to feel suffocated for that object, right? If you look at texts such as here in this paragraph, you are able to understand the meaning because the words are properly spaced apart from other words to signify its independence. If there are no spaces between words, it would be hard to comprehend the context. The same goes for web pages. Although it is important to include useful material to your web design, it does not necessarily mean that there should be no small empty spaces.
Furthermore, white space, commonly called negative space, adds certain sophistication. If you would look at typical ads, those which have lower prices have big and glaring pictures, symbols and letters, letting the viewer know that the price of the product or service is cheap. You can compare this to beauty products and services ads, which usually has smaller letters and more spaces. The consumer tends to assume that the product or service is much more expensive. Empty space exudes some sort of elegance.
If you apply the concept of white space in your text, you would notice that the material is easier to read. That is why there are articles that use ample spaces such as indents and line breaks. To catch the reader’s attention, web designers usually make that portion into a major element. One way to do that is to add underlines or make the texts bold to highlight. The eye of the reader would tend to focus on the highlighted part than on any other elements.
