Importance of Web Design

The widely accepted meaning of web design, both in Kenya and the world in general, is the creation of hypertext content presentations that are delivered to the end user through the World Wide Web, using a web browser or other web-enabled technology. This encompasses the entire process of creation and uploading of a web site. Technically, however, web design is actually distinct from web development, the two of which together make up the creation of a complete website. Web design involves the aesthetic features of the site, while web development involves the functional and interactive parts.

There is a growing trend among website proprietors and creators to place a large emphasis on the development aspect of a website, while paying inadequate attention to the equally important web design aspect. This is due to the many pressures involved in a competitive online market (time, cost, etc) where most websites are created in order to gain some advantage over competitors, hence their immediate functionality (and hence return on investment) is considered most urgent. It should be understood however that the design part of a website, the way it looks to users and their experience while interacting with it, are equally important to the eventual effectiveness of the site and should not be ignored.

There are many opinions and views on what good web design is and its importance, but placing more emphasis on the Kenyan market, we will summarize them here as follows:

• Navigation –
Without going into too much detail, this involves not only navigation itself but other issues such as precedence and orientation. Navigation itself involves the ease and efficiency with which a user finds their way around the site. Orientation involves making sure the user knows where they are on the site. Precedence involves making sure the information that the designer wishes to convey to the user is properly located according to importance.

• Look –
How a website looks , involving spacing, typography, and alignment. The site needs to be spacious (as clutter disorients the user), the typography (font size, line length, text colors) done just right, and everything consistently aligned, making the pages more ordered and easy to digest.

• Usability –
The designer must make sure to design with the user in mind, i.e. what they are looking to accomplish while on the site, what tasks they will carry out while on the site and whether or not the design enhances or deters the completion of these tasks. It is also important to include all users, from those using different types of web browsers or operating systems, to disabled or impaired users. All this can be accomplished by actually trying out the designs, e.g. through tests.

All of the above go a long way to improving the users experience and hence the time they spend on the site. This in turn is directly related to the effectiveness of the site, by increasing the likelihood of the user doing whatever it is that the designer intended for them to do on the site and increasing the likelihood of them coming back in the future. Hence designers should pay just as much attention to the design of the website as they do to its functionality, because it is just as important.
