Importance of high quality images in your web design

Your web site is the mirror of your business. The design of it should be as polished as your brick and mortar store. Images and graphical elements are as important in the website as the content of it. The graphic design of the website, either that’s your logo, the banner of the header section or images that represent your products or are just there to enhance the store’s image, should be well designed and of course carefully edited.

When you create images, or use pictures, you should know how to optimize them for the web. It’s true that with many graphic design programs, in order to achieve great results, you end up creating large file sizes. However, things have developed and we can optimize them, or save them in such a format, for better appearance on the web with a smaller size, suitable for the web for both fast loading and to keeping its original quality.

One of the biggest mistakes is to create bad .gif files that are distorted, with pixels and the whole image is just a set of dots. This is something that belongs to the past and designers should be aware of the new methods on how to optimize their graphics and images for the web.

When it comes to graphics the standard format to save them for web is the .gif format. They preserve most of the elements of the image and the size of a .gif file is very small, meaning faster loading times. However, lately, .gif has a rival. It’s the .png format. Many prefer that since it can have up to 16 million colors and the file size will still be a matter of bytes. It’s easy to understand why many prefer .png over .gif, since the latter can only have up to 256 colors. However, some browsers might have not be able to recognize the .png format, like IE6 or earlier. Nevertheless nowadays it shouldn’t be a problem, but it’s wise to always test your website in as much browsers as you can. You don’t want to miss a potential customer just because they use a different browser than you.

When you want to save pictures, then the ideal format is the .jpeg format. It’s important to maintain a good quality and an optimized file size. When you try to save a picture in .jpg format, you will get to choose their quality in a scale from 0 to 100%. In that case, it’s obvious to understand that the closer you save it to 100% the better the quality. Careful because saving it in a low scale, might cause a really bad distortion. It’s not good to have, for an example, a stylish picture of New York with the Statue of Liberty, full of pixels.

Even if the loading takes just a second, if the overall quality of the website is not as good, it will not have a positive impact to the users. Keep your images as optimized as possible and make sure you always save them for web, whether that’s .gif, .jpg or .png.
