Html (Hyper Text Markup Language) was one of the deciding factors in the development of the web, as we know it today. Ever since 1991, when the first html website appeared, it has been the backbone of web design.

Before this, html was used to share documentation, but since then, it has become one of the predominant web design languages, largely due to the ease with which it can be learnt, although developers these days often use a newer, more updated version, called XHTML.

The main function of html on a web page is to manipulate text. While traditional text insertion methods can create tables, paragraphs and line breaks, html takes it to the next level, allowing advanced manipulation of text, such as layering, framing, and anchor tags.

Html is identified as a series of commands, or code, contained within angled brackets. It is a set of instructions, on how your website will look, function and operate in a browser, and it is combined with text to create the more dynamic facets of some great looking websites.

The good news about html, besides being easy to learn, is that there is sample code available almost everywhere on the web, that merely needs to be edited to suit your requirements, so, once you’ve grasped the basics, you don’t actually need to build code from scratch, simply find a suitable sample, and make a few changes.

The main components of html are attributes, which provide additional information on an element, elements, which help categories the parts of an html page, and entities, which demote non ASC characters.

Learning html not only gives you a new skill, it allows you to add dimension and depth to your website. In addition, because it is easy to learn – a beginner can have a basic working knowledge within a few weeks – it is accessible to just about anyone.
