HTML vs Flash in web design

There has been an ever going debate between the flash web design and the HTML/CSS web design.

Both sides have serious arguments for choosing each one of them. However, we will try and give a wider view of the pros and cons of each design method, since both can create amazing websites, which if designed correctly, can lead your online business to great success.

One of the biggest advantages of HTML is that you can create websites with it, for free. You don’t have to purchase anything, since you can create a website by using any text editor which can be found, already installed, in almost all modern operating systems.

Flash on the other hand has to be bought and it can be quite expensive, especially for the newly starting small companies but of course, one can argue that you should invest in acquiring the Flash suite since it can give you back great profits.

Another difference between flash and HTML, is the flexibility of design. With flash you can design anything and you can place your elements wherever you want. That cannot happen with HTML, since even if you make the elements of your design, appear on certain positions there are no guarantees that that design will be presented in the same way when you access it on different browsers. Many browsers have problems showing designs the way they should and that’s something that web designers are struggling with, since they must offer to each user the same web experience.

Flash websites are really popular in the art and business section, since the designer can create whatever they want, or whatever their client would want, without restrictions, giving them the opportunity to design fancy menus with buttons placed in unusual places, creating an amazingly artistic website that can really impress its users.

Flash can give eye-candy to users, and it’s used to create elements that will attract users’ attention. Animated graphics always catch our eye and it’s a good design technique to promote things within a website.

However, it’s also true that flash gives some browser-related headaches that HTML doesn’t. For instance, the back button doesn’t work and you will have to navigate through the website’s menu and for that, designers should create a user friendly navigation panel. Also you can’t bookmark any given webpage of a flash site. You can only save the homepage and you’ll have to browse again to find what you need.

Another big issue is that Flash is not SEO friendly. That was true, however things have changed.  With HTML/CSS web designs, the content will be indexed and found by the spiders of the search engines. But when it comes to Flash, the developer should create additional content, thus more code, which will be placed outside of the swf file that will contain keywords and key phrases. So , flash is not SEO friendly by itself, but a good flash designer will know what to do in order for a flash website to be found by search engines.

One advice is that if you want a fast loading, informative, business-like website, HTML/CSS is a good option for you. But if you belong in a more artistic field, then Flash would be ideal for you.
