HTML – The Elements

HTML, a contraction for HyperText Markup Language, is the main markup language that is used for developing web pages. HTML enables web designers to portray the structure of information that is text based in a web document usually by symbolizing certain headings, paragraphs, texts as links and lists. HTML also enables a web designer to supplement embedded text in a web page with various objects, embedded and other interactive. It is also used to describe the semantics and appearance of a document. HTML incorporates scripting language codes including JavaScript that can have an effect on HTML processors and web browsers.

The first form of HTML was contained in a document known as HTML tags that was first mentioned on the website by Bernes Lee in1991. The semantics of many of the HTML tags can be traced to text formatting languages that existed in earlier times. HTML markup is made up of several key components such as elements, character references, character based data types and entity attributes. Another essential component of HTML is document type declaration which is used to identify the Document type. Elements are the essential basic structure for HTML markup language. They have two basic properties: content and attributes.

Each element content and attribute has various restrictions and rules that must be followed in order for a HTML document to be considered legitimate. An element in a HTML is usually made up of two tags. One is the start tag. The other is an end tag. An example of a start tag is < element-name> and that of an end tag is . The attributes of the element are included in the start tag. On the other hand, the content of the element is positioned between the tags for example content do not feature content. Therefore, they must have a closing tag.

There are several mark up elements that are used in HTML. One of these is structural mark up. Structural markup is used to describe the purpose of the text in HTML. The mark up element does not designate any particular rendering. Texts in this mark up element can be styles with mark up languages such as Cascading Style Sheets. The other mark up element used in HTML is presentational mark up. Presentational mark up defines the appearance of the text during HTML formation. Such elements have become denounced under HTML 4.O specification in favor of other mark up languages such as Cascading Style Sheets.

The third type of mark up elements that is used in HTML is Hypertext markup. Hypertext Markup is used in linking various parts of the document to other documents during web design. HTML through version XHTM requires the utilization of anchor elements to form hyperlink in the flow of text. Documents that are created using HTML are usually delivered by the same method as other computer files. However, most of the time, HTML documents are delivered using HTTP from e mail or other web servers.
