HTML 101 in Website Design

The good thing about creating pages for the Web is you don’t really need any specialized software to accomplish it. A simple text editor such as Notepad will do the trick. Many word processors like MS Word can save files as HTML (HyperText Markup Language), the file format on which web pages are based. Each page is a separate HTML file and can have any filename you want to give it, as long as it ends in “.htm”. The only exception is the primary or home page of your site. It should be named “index.htm”.

HTML works similar to the earliest word processors, which required you to insert commands, surrounded by special characters, into the text to achieve the desired formatting. In HTML, formatting tags are surrounded by <these symbols>. Text affected by a particular formatting command will have a tag before and after it. Think of them as “on” and “off” switches. The “off” tag at the end differs from the “on” tag at the beginning in that the command is preceded by a slash.

One of the most potentially frustrating aspects of working with HTML is you can’t see the end result while you’re working on it. You have to look at the tags and visualize what the page will look like. While this isn’t too difficult at first, and many people who have experience writing computer programs actually prefer to do it this way. But as your formatting becomes more complex, it can rapidly become confusing.

For those who prefer a more graphical approach, there are commercial tools for creating web pages in WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) environment, not unlike a word processor. They have also offer the advantage of being able to switch with a single mouse click between the normal view, which approximates the page’s appearance in a Web browser and HTML view, which allows one to edit the HTML code itself.

The concept of creating, designing and maintaining a website may sound like a complicated endeavor at first blush. But by learning some of the basics and using the proper tools, you should be well on your way towards creating, designing, and reaping the rewards of having your very own Website.
