Why do I need a Home page?  Why can’t I put my whole website on my Home page?  What is a Home page???  Your Home page of your website is your introduction to the world.  Aside from a Flash Introduction, it will be the first thing that everyone sees when visiting your website.  It’s also the safe and familiar place to head back to after browsing through your whole website.

Studies show that people’s attention spans on the internet have grown increasingly short.  There’s just so much information out there that it’s easy to quickly lose interest in a particular page.  An ITBusinessEdge.com article also mentions that the younger generation (raised on computers) usually leaps for graphics and images, and often doesn’t even read text.  The older generations are generally the opposite, reading all text, and using the pictures as supplement to the information.  Who are you trying to appeal to?

A Home page should have a good amount of graphic content, including great design and some high quality images that represent your business in a general way.  There should be some text, but can be as little as just a couple of paragraphs or so.  The text and pictures on your Home page should give a summary of what you have to offer, and what your website is about.  The key is that when someone lands on your Home page they understand what they will find here, and are intrigued to keep reading on through your pages.
