You may not have heard of a young college student who was so into crafting earrings and bracelets out of beads. In the beginning she used to sell it to friends, who will wear them and eventually, people will start wondering where they got their unique accessories from. She got so many inquiries from people about her accessories that she decided to put up a website for her products. It was just a simple website she designed herself and she used one of the social networking websites. She sold her products there and got orders from friends of friends of friends. Eventually her products started to be ordered by people out of the country, in bulk. Now, though her business is still small, she has a steady clientele who only orders and pays through her web page. She has never met most of her buyers, but they regularly come back for more.

When interviewed, she was asked if she was not getting tired doing all these stuff. She said that it is something she will be doing, anyway, with or without people purchasing them. Now that she is making money out of her hobby, it has inspired her more. The way she sees it, she says, is that she gets to create these pieces, and people not only fund her hobby, but pay her for something she likes to do, anyway.

She names two things as her key success factors: quality of her product and the use of a website. She said that she can price her products very reasonably because she doesn’t pay for overhead costs, and she has zero marketing costs, thanks to the World Wide Web. She adds that because of her website, she is able to reach buyers she might not even have connected to if she has marketed her products the usual way.  Had she printed leaflets and done the usual advertisements, she would have spent more and reached fewer customers. But her website enabled her to multiply her customers in a very short time. Now that is a success story if you’ve ever heard of one.
