The great news these days is that with all the tools and products related to web design out there, it is no longer necessary to even have any html knowledge!

• Use the whole available space.

• Plan your layout before starting. Taking an old fashioned piece of paper and pencil, and figuring out where everything will go, will make designing the layout much easier!

• Create a basic template, that all of your pages will be based on. That template can then be modified, but it avoids reinventing the wheel for each page!

• Use relatively sized layout sections, which allow browsers to expand and contract them, without affecting the visual ratios on your website.

• Text width is an important factor – generally, internet users are used to seven to ten words per line. Lengthening or shortening of this can lead to discomfort to the reader.

• Animations and graphics are great – in moderation! Too many and your site will be distracting, cluttered and confusing, so avoid the temptation to go wild with graphics!

• Give content pride of place. Since web users are looking for information, your content should have pride of place, and be easy to follow, and find! Cluttering up the prime section of your page, the centre, with ads, graphics and animations is a no no. Reserve that space for information your visitors can use!

Pleasing, well balanced layouts make for great websites. Spend some time and effort making sure you get the layout right, and half your web design battle is won! A good idea might be to visit other websites, and note their layout. Then, pick the ones you like, and base your site layout on them.
