Handy Hints for Website Graphics

If you are building your own site, graphics could be one of the trickiest aspects you will have to tackle. Here are a few tips and tricks that should make working with graphics for websites easier:

  • •    High colour graphics, such as photos, should be saved as Jpeg files.
  • •    Lower colour graphics can be saved as Gif files – generally lower resolution, but also smaller, and less time consuming when your pages load!
  • •    Play with the compression of Jpeg files though – it should be possible to get a reasonable quality image that is slightly compressed, and therefore smaller and quicker to load.
  • •    Choose web safe colours – these are colours that remain true, even when viewed on older, 8-bit graphics. Otherwise, you could end up having images that show dithering, and therefore look unprofessional.
  • •    Use anti aliasing in your graphics program to make sure the edges of your graphics look smooth when displayed online.
  • •    Avoid what is know as the “halo effect” (when you set a very different background on an image to transparent, and some of the old background still shows up around the image on your site) by designing the graphic on a very similar background color.
  • •    Define the Alt tags on your images, so that users who have turned off graphics will still be able to see what is supposed to be there!
  • •    Define the height and width attributes of images, so that text wraps correctly while the image is loading, and users can still read the surrounding text while loading.
  • •    Lastly, if you are looking for high quality photos to use for your site, which are not copyright protected, there are free stock photo sites out there that you could try. Freerangestock and Morgue.com are two examples of these.

Aside from coding, designing great graphics for your website can be one of the trickiest tasks you will have to tackle. If you are not 100% confident in your abilities, consider hiring a professional.

Your website is visible to billions of internet users, and it is important to get it right!
