Guide to HTML Editors
Choosing an HTML editor is serious business for professional web designers. For one thing, they’re not exactly cheap—you can easily spend several hundreds on a top-selling brand. It’s definitely not the kind of decision you make overnight.
So how do you choose an HTML editor that’s worth your money? Here’s a quick buying guide to help you make the right choice.
Free editors
First, if you’re really on a budget, you can find free programs online—even a few web-based ones that don’t require any installation. But you get what you pay for, and free HTML editors often lack functionality. They may work for a small personal site, but if you want a professional-looking site, you’ll need to invest in proprietary software.
Text or WYSIWYG?
Most mainstream editors are of the WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get”) type, which means you can see your changes as they would appear on the browser. Technically, you can build a whole site on a WYSIWIG editor without knowing the first thing about HTML.
A text editor, on the other hand, requires you to enter the code manually and load it to your browser as needed. It requires a lot more work, but it gives you much more flexibility and control than a WYSIWYG. Most programs have both a text and visual mode, so you can code and design at the same time.
Choosing your features
Some features are pretty standard across all editors, such as automatic tags and split-screen modes. But as you work, you’ll find that you need some features more than others. Do you want one with a validator or support for add-ins? Does it need to support languages other than HTML, such as XML or PHP? Decide what you want to do with your website, and look for a program that delivers.
User support issues
One of the most overlooked aspects of HRML editors is user support. While most publishers have a tech support line, sometimes it’s better to get help from actual users. Popular brands such as Dreamweaver have an advantage, since you have a large user base to get support from. Unless you’re fine with troubleshooting on your own, take time to consider community support before splurging on a program.
