Good navigation for web design
the menu of your site is the most important element, since it’s the only thing that never changes. of course there are many creative ideas of navigation that don’t keep the menu steady, however, that magnificent design-wise idea, might not be so practical in real usage and might in fact drive your online users away.
However, if you have an art related website, if you are a photographer, an actor, singer or similar, a fancy menu with flash animations might be suitable for you. but when it comes to the online business field, a user friendly website with an easilly accessible navigation menu, will be your best choice.
The key element of a successful web design, is to make the users that come for the first time to your site, to feel at home and comfortable to browse. There shouldn’t be any learning curve in your website and your online customers or readers, should immediatelly identify what you do and what you can offer to them. if you are an online store, the navigation process within your site should be smooth and easily understood. your navigation menu should stay the same in every page, meaning that your main categories should stay obvious at all times, and always make it easy to your users, with just a click away, to return back to the home page.
you can have either a horizontal menu or a vertical menu on the left or the right. the left is considered the standard, however, lately many have started to incorporate the right side also, as it is considered to be easy to spot, since it’s closer to the scrolling bar of the browser.
a horizontal menu is very common and the advantage is that you can see all the main categories without having to scroll down on the web page.
whether you have a horizontal or a vertical menu, it’s recommended to highlight the category or subcategory that your users are visiting at any point. keep the colors steady of course, however you can use a different color tone for the specific category or make the font to appear in bold so that it can stand out. and always offer the “returt to home” option.
It is really important to offer a user friendly navigation menu since this is main way that your online viewers will search your website. they shouldn’t feel puzzled of what to click next and where to go from the home page. it is very important that they can easily understand where they are, at any given point, how “deep” they have gone in your site and how easily they can returt back to the starting point. your categories should have easily understood names and there is no reason to try and impress them with fancy words, unless you are using terminology words, in case you are selling or offering information for specialized field.
an accessible website is the key to your online success and offering an easy to read and use navigation menu is going to keep your users satisfied by your services and they will be coming back again soon.
