Use Free Downloads to Build Website Traffic

It’s a fact of life, online and off, that people love free stuff. Many a person has been convinced to purchase an item that they may, or may not need, simply because there is the promise of a “freebie.”

Offering free downloads on your site can be a great way to build traffic. Once people start downloading, if the item is useful or entertaining, they will tell their friends, and so on, building your site.

It’s therefore a great idea to include a download area in your web design plan, but what should you include?

E-books and Whitepapers

If you have a business site, a good idea is to offer free e-books or whitepapers relating to your business or industry as downloads.

For example, if you own a construction business, you could write and offer for download, an e-book on calculating building material quantities. On the other hand, if you have a bridal business, perhaps a free e book on wedding etiquette. Maybe you’re a labour consultant. Prepare a pack of useful, generic documents for dealing with employees, such as employment contracts, disciplinary forms or other documents, and allow users to download one or all of them.

Match your downloadable content to your business, make it interesting and useful, and you can’t really go wrong!

Multimedia Files

Create presentations, movies or images relating to your site, that are useful or interesting, and allow users to download them for free.

Wallpapers and Screensavers

This is a very popular option, and for good reason. It’s very easy, with a little knowledge of graphics and photo manipulation software, to create great wallpapers easily, maybe even some that feature something about your site?

Screensavers are a little trickier, but not much! If you use Flash, or hire a designer who can use Flash, you can have a great screensaver in very little time.

Make sure that whatever you do create though looks good, and in the case of screensavers, that they have around five minutes of interesting content – not just a few graphics on a loop!

Tools

Tools like currency converters, lotto number generators, or metric to imperial converters, to name but a few, are very popular. Most people need little tools like these to make life easier, and if you can create, or have one created, that offers a useful, time saving function, you will have a popular tool!

Demos

Offering a demo version of a game or software application that you are developing, or having a free trial version that expires after a period of time is another great idea for a free download.

Not only does this create more traffic for your site, but users who download your products demo or trial might just decide to buy the full version later on!

Whatever you offer, whether it is one of these ideas, or something completely different, if it’s interesting, useful or entertaining, it will keep visitors coming back. So develop some free offers, and include a download area on your new website.
