Finding Photographs for your Site

Most websites use photographs in some way or another. Whether it’s as a part of a graphic, or as a stand alone image, chances are, you are going to need some photographs for your site. You have a few choices however, where you get them! Here are the top three options:

Take Them Yourself

If you have a digital camera of anything over around 5 megapixels, and your images are not going to be very large, you could consider taking them yourself. The advantages of this approach is that you have at least some guarantee that your photos will be unique, and you can keep trying until you get it right!

The easiest shots, by far, are still lifes, followed by landscapes, and the last, and most difficult, are those involving live action or models. If you need photos of objects or places therefore, you should be fine. Taking pictures of people may take a little more practice!

Notwithstanding all of these issues though, do remember that a good photo editing package can remove a multitude of flaws from your pictures!

Find Free or Cheap Stock Photos

Stock photos are all over the internet! There are sites though where you can find free stock photos for free, or relatively cheaply. Free sites include Freerangestock.com and Morgue.com, and one of the best cheap sites is istockphoto.com.

A search of the net will undoubtedly reveal more options, or you could opt for the more expensive stock photo sites, but be warned – licensing a photograph for internet use can be a very costly proposition!

Hire a Photographer

If you need very high quality, very specific photographs for your site, for example shots of your products, consider hiring a professional photographer. The initial cost may be higher, but at least you’ll be assured of exclusivity, and depending on the agreement with the photographer, own the rights to the photographs!

A cheaper option, if you are on a budget, but want to go this route, is to find a final year photography student at a local college or university. They will charge less than a seasoned professional, but will deliver comparable results.

Whatever option you choose to solve your website photo problems, remember that its better not to upload a photo than to upload a terrible one!
