How To Explain a Missing item On The Site
When a user is unable to find a document or image that is indicated as being on a certain web page the disappointment may be enormous. The most probable they will receive is a message headlined Error 404. although a few sites my use the phrase ‘Not Found’ or some other phrases, Error 404 is the most common expression when an item is not traceable on the site. This is one of the most regularly occurring HTTP codes on the world wide web. Encountering this message may imply various circumstances. It is only fair that the explanation is posted on the web page is that curious visitors can at lest account for their failure.
When a search reveals that a document was not found there could a number of grounds explaining such a predicament. The site could have been reorganized. When this happens there is much action that involves documents. Some of them may be renamed while others moved around in the site structure. A few others could be deemed to have outlived their usefulness hence face the chop. When such actions are taken and corresponding remaining, shifting or shifting of links is not taken, this could be the genesis of the problem.
There are instances when migration of from an existing server to a new one happens. Sometimes, the implications are greater because one is trying to change the operating system in which the hosting had taken place. This could lead to the loss or mix up of documents as well as documents. Documents which are titled in lower case may also be easy to confuse with similar ones bearing uppercase or title. The confusion with cases mostly occurs in sites that are administered from Microsoft Windows to the exclusion of other operating systems. Such mistakes can easily be avoided by creating redirections in regard to any deleting, renaming or nay other form of exchange that may occur.
Mistyping accounts for some of the highest number of errors. People could get URL addresses from other media such as billboards, letterheads or business cards where they could have been mistyped. When they use such addresses they are likely to be met with Error 404. in other cases they may end up on the wrong site or document. The error may also occur when one mistypes the web areas in the course of making their search. It is safer for clients or visitors to make mistakes but web designers may not have the same luxury.
Web masters or anyone maintaining the site should always collaborate with whoever is doing the printing of stationery or any other promotional material for the site to avoid such errors. Some of the errors may even be corrected immediately if visitors make use of Apache spell checking tools if at all such is provided on the web page or site directory.
There are cases when documents claimed to exist on a site may not actually exist. Several reasons may explain this anomaly. Visitors may have assumptions that since some documents exist on other sites they should also be present on one’s site. Furthermore, certain icons or links may be synonymous with certain documents on several sites yet the same may not hold for all sites. Designers should try to avoid any culpability in the errors while at the same time ensuring offer plausible explanations on those that occur.
