Enhancing Easy Navigation on a Site
Visitors always come to a site with specific needs in mind. It is important that the designer envisages such needs as early as the web design stage. This should be followed by the provision of effective navigation tools. Throughout the design process, one should check out such tools to ensure that are functioning as they should.
Links are some of the most common navigation tools. Links are also important for classifying information on a site. This makes it easier for users to locate whatever information they want and find it. Usually, main links should be featured at the top of the browser page. These have to appear on the home page as well as all the subsequent pages.
Links must appear in the same manner on all the pages. Other links may also be placed on the right and left sides of the web page as well as the bottom of the page. One can also provide in-text links that should be placed strategically in the text body on all the pages. In placing links on the web page, the designer must imagine that place a visitor could most likely look at first. Such points should be reserved for primary links.
Links that are placed at the bottom of the page must only serve as a back up to whatever links there are on the top or side of the page. Furthermore, the bottom could be reserved fort specific information such as contacts. The font size of all links must differ substantially to alert the user as to their importance. To enhance the prominence of links the designer may even use a different font type, size or color. Such effects will make them stand out from the rest of the content.
Links do not necessarily have to be made up of text. The web designer may opt for icons as long as they fit into the web design tasks that have been set. There can be a combination of text as well as images which should work well with the right balance and positioning. However, the links must not be put in such a manner that will keep drawing attention away from the text even after one has found whatever information they were looking for.
For navigation tools to be effective, they must be understandable. This requires the use of words or mages that may not offer conflicting signals to the user. Furthermore, links should be placed adequately. They should lead to the text that is envisaged so as not to waste the user’s time and try their patience. Links must be brief and to the point. This minimizes on the amount of space they use on the web page.
If one has many links, they may need to use various categories as well as sub categories. By clicking on one link, there could be several topics from which one may choose whatever item best suits their interest. Each of the menus provided should display the choices long enough for the user to make up their mind and click on them. Menus, sub categories and categories may only be used if there is need otherwise they may only serve in crowding the site.
