Effective White Space
White space, also known as negative space, refers to the empty space between the elements of your website design. An essential feature in graphic and print design, white space is now being appreciated and effectively used by professional web designers.
When setting the feel of your website, it’s essential to understand how the use of white space will effect the viewer. In most branding and logos, you will find that the more sophisticated, elite products use ample white space while the cheaper, more “fun” products enhance the urgency of your purchase by cramming elements close together. Decide how you want your viewer to feel when using your website and branding, and adjust your white space accordingly.
When discussing white space, your web designers may mention “macro white space” and “micro white space”. These refer, respectively, to the larger space between website design elements and to the smaller (micro) space between lines of text. Both elements of white space are essential to balance for a website design to be attractive and functional.
Ensuring you have an ample amount of micro white space is essential to legibility of your text. Individual letters and lines need an appropriate amount of breathing room in ratio to the amount of text on the page. If you are designing a page with a large amount of content, it’s advisable to use a serif font so individual letters don’t spill into each other and apply up to double spacing between lines. Use plenty of paragraph breaks and appropriate margins.
Macro white space is what pads out graphics, blocks of text and headings. If words are too close to an image, the immediate impression to the user is that they are viewing an amateur website; same goes for headings that are crammed to close to the content and blocks of text that sit too close to the margins. Work with your web designers to place the elements of your website in an uncluttered design. Try using a grid and other graphic design tools.
When web designers use both macro and micro white space efficiently, the result is a clean, uncluttered and sophisticated website that is a pleasure to use.
