Effective Use of Color on Your Website

Color is an incredibly important aspect of effective and creative web design, but there are some rules of thumb that should be followed, to make sure that you get it right! Here are a few tips to apply when choosing and applying color to your website:

  • Choose a colour scheme. Pick a few complimentary colors, shades and tones, and use them consistently throughout your site.
  • Limit the number of different colors you use – too many and your site becomes a riot of clashing colors, and can confuse the viewer.
  • Remember that you may have colorblind visitors, and certain combinations, like red and green, blue and yellow, and purple and orange, are indistinguishable from each other to these kinds of users. Bear that in mind when placing colored text on a color background, for example, as they will not be able to see the text!
  • Keep the contrast between text and background. Light on dark and dark on light works, as the contrast is high, and it is easy to read. Avoid colors like red for text, as they can be difficult to read.
  • You can use intense colors on your site, but keep them as an accent. Brights surrounded by white, and accented with black or gray, can look amazing!
  • When using photographs, keep background and accent colors neutral, or use black and white photographs. Color and photographs can be overkill!
  • Match your colors to your audience. A site aimed at children could be cheerful and bright, and you could get away with more color. A lawyer’s site, on the other hand, should reflect the gravity of the profession, and stick to more muted tones, and a limited palette.

Along with content and graphics, color is one of the basic building blocks of a great site. It is certainly worthwhile spending some time getting it right! Try various combinations, and see which one works best. You could even recruit a few friends and family or co-workers to choose their favorites.

Whatever you do though, follow these simple rules, and your site’s color scheme should be a great success!
