Easing Visitors through Your Site
A web site must be designed in a user friendly manner. The designer must make sure that once a visitor gets onto the site they have an easy time getting around and finding information. Similarly, they should not get lost for lack of adequate markers. The web designer can avoid such problems and many others by making sure that visitors not only enjoy their time on the site but are also bale to accomplish tasks with much ease.
It is important to begin by checking the length of web pages to be installed. Pages that are too long may could bore readers. In the same vein, extremely short pages may prove inadequate if the information provided is inadequate. Web pages should therefore be structured with a middle ground in mind. It is advisable that web pages occupy a maximum of two screens. This length could be extended to no more than seven screenfuls in the case of articles. This will also prevent the need for unnecessary clicking every time one has to continue the article on another page.
Many web designers will gladly include links that will lead visitors to different sections. Unfortunately, some forget that once visitors get to these destinations sometimes they may need to get back to the main page. This is something that can be done by including links that indicate to visitors how they can get to then main page. Words such as Home can be used when naming such links. Words such as previous and next may also help the visitor to trace the immediate pages in case they need to.
The menu of the web site needs to be included on every page. This is important not only for navigation purposes but also for consistency in the navigation process. Visitors will expect to find most of the links in the standard navigation bars similar across the pages. Such uniformity is important for the consistent outlook of all web pages. Including the menu on every page also provides the user with several options. The search for different information can prolong the visitor’s stay rather than if they are only confronted with home, back and previous options.
The need for consistency on the web pages can become quite a burden. This gives rise to the need for shortcuts. Designers can use frames on different web pages. Frames though helpful should only be used in certain circumstances. If the site deserves to have headers and footers on all pages or there is need for ease in navigation, frames come in handy. Unfortunately these frames have a flip side that could work disastrously for the web designer. The address bar remains intact thus hindering visitors from accessing other pages. The frame may also prove too prominent hence competing for space with other content on the web page.
Java Script has the capability to identify many of these problems Even then in addition to fixing such nagging issues; the designer should aim at getting their frames to work in a better manner. Server side includes can also help to enhance the ease of using frames while giving a visitors smooth ride across the site.
